A Quiet Place Invitation – Lectio Divina on a Sacred Text
Monday evening, May 21, 2012 6:30 p.m.
Lectio Divina is a spiritual or prayer practice where one hears a sacred text three times, with silent prayer time between each time. The first time the text is read we are noting what we notice or what “grabs us”. The second time we hear the text we notice if there is a specific word or phrase that jumps out at us. The third time we hear the text, we are listening for what good word or message may be calling to us for our life or for the world. Those participating are welcome to share insights or not as they feel led.
May, June and July will offer three Lectio Divina experiences in The Quiet Place. This first one will use a sacred text/story as the focus. The second one in June will use art as the focus. And the third one will use story as the focus. I hope you’ll consider joining us as a way to learn more about Lectio Divina and pray in a different way these nights! Contact me with any questions! – Pastor Erin - (209)523-1438
Be still and know that I am God… - Psalm 16:10
Come unto me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. – Matthew 11:28
Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” – Mark 6:31
There is an inner realm, the country in which the true self grows, that is more important than things that can be seen or handled. – Anna Mow, 20th century Church of the Brethren Missionary/Seminary Professor
As a living peace church, we seek to be rooted in Christ in order to engage the world in healthy and helpful ways toward bridge building and reconciliation for all God’s creation.
We believe this begins with personal and communal prayer/meditation that helps us stay centered and resting in God, who is our eternal home. As we take time for any number of meaningful prayer practices, we discover or make our way back to who we were created to be, our truest selves. As we find a greater sense of personal peace, we are better able to be about the things that make for peace. We are better able to respond rather than react to the world around us.
In a world that seems to encourage and seduce us into busyness and chaos, often separating us from a sense of the God who surrounds, enfolds, and inspires us, The Modesto Church of the Brethren seeks to offer a space to take quiet time out for rest, renewal and the rediscovery of the God who is near at hand.
The Quiet Place is a space dedicated for making holy connections. All are welcome here. This space is available for individual and group prayer or meditation.
May this space and the time spent here be a blessing to all who enter…a catalyst toward God’s vision for the world…
