Spirituality speaks to how we understand and connect with God at work in the world and within us. There are many different ways that we live out our spirituality and the Modesto Church of the Brethren offers several ways for people to deepen that connection. Uncovering Treasures in the Word … The Parables of Matthew
2nd & 4thWednesdays in May (9th&23rd) 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
OR
3rd & 5thThursdays in May (10th&24th)10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Join with others in an exploration of some of the parables found in the gospel of Matthew. Pack light for the trip, bringing just your own faith, curiosity and questions. Look for the sign-ups at church and choose the day and time that works for you. There are two options, but they will use the same material. Please sign-up by Sunday, March 4th for the Thursday group, and Sunday March 11th for the Wednesday group. Pastor Russ leading Wednesdays and Pastor Erin leading Thursdays.
Sowing Tears, Reaping Joy: The Bible and Brahms’ Requiem - an exploration of grief and hope
Thursdays beginning April 26, 7:00-8:30 pm in the Gathering Place, for about 7 weeks (end of May). All are welcome.

The apostle Paul wrote that he did not want us to “grieve as others do who have no hope” (I Thessalonians 4:13).
He does not tell us not to grieve, but implies that for Christians, grief happens in hope’s strong embrace.
This study features magnificent passages from the Bible and clear passages from Brahms’ German Requiem.
In fact, the music and scripture may unlock biblical tenderness in a way never experienced before.
The Knitting Ministry meets twice a month on a Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Mary Baucher’s home. You will have to call for date as it is not consistant. We make prayer shawls, caps and sweaters for kids in need as well as items for our families. We are learning knitting can be a time of quiet prayer and meditation as well as a time to produce fine articles. At our gatherings there are always have a couple of readings relating to knitting and spirituality and faith. Prayer shawls are knit and given to someone dealing illness, grief, difficult situations, or just as a way to say thanks to someone. Blessing the prayer shawls before they are delivered is a very special time for those attending. Call Mary at 523-5178 if you have questions or need more information.
There are two men’s groups which meet separately where newcomers are welcome:
The Saturday Morning Men’s Group meets the first and third Saturdays of each month at the church from 8:30am-9:30am.
The Thursday Morning Men’s Group meets at Denny’s Restaurant on McHenry & Orangeburg in Modesto the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6:00am. For more information or to confirm a meeting, call the office @ (209)523-1438.
Youth Meetings – for 5th to 12th grades.
Following worship on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, youth gather for lunch, games, service, study, and sharing. Pastor Russ Matteson works with our youth.
Young Adult Group – Ages 18 to 30
We meet every other Wednesday for dinner at Faith Bites and stay afterwards once a month for a discussion and also enjoy a monthly outing or activity. Call for a schedule today or find us on Facebook.
Creative Prayer Group –
Creative prayer is an opportunity to gather with others in the midst of candlelight and a creative worship center for silence, reflection on spiritual writings and sharing and prayer. We currently have one active Creative Prayer group, and are always willing to start others if there is a group of 4 or more desiring this kind of spiritual growth experience. Prospectors -
This is a group of folks that meet about once a month for fellowship. Usually, there is a potluck lunch after church, held in someone’s home or backyard. Prospectors are generally in the age range of late 50s to early 70s, both couples and singles. Newcomers are welcome! Contact Margaret Johnson @ (209)522-0746.
